Mountain Base is situated in the heart of the central Drakensberg Mountains of KwaZulu Natal Province, South Africa. We border the prestigious Drakensberg Ukahlamba National Heritage Park, renowned for both its cultural and geographic significance. We are two and a half hours drive from Durban and four hours from Johannesburg, well within weekend distance from either.

Detailed Directions

from Durban/Pietermaritzburg

Follow the N3 north, passing Pietermaritzburg and Mooi River.
Take the 3rd Estcourt turn off which is the Estcourt North (exit 179) glide off.
Turn left onto the Loskop road and travel 30kms.
Turn left on the R600.and continue for 15kms.
Turn right through the beige walled entrance.
Follow the road down past the Drakensberg Boys Choir for 1km.
Go through the security gate and follow the signage.

from Johannesburg/Pretoria

Travel from Johannesburg to Van Reenen's Pass on the N3. Pass through the Tugela Toll Plaza which is at the bottom of Van Reenen's Pass. Continue approximately 14 kilometers to the R616 BERGVILLE turn off, proceed left on the N11 towards Ladysmith for approximately 4 kilometers and turn right onto the R600 Spioenkop / Winterton Rd. Travel along over the highway, and past Spioenkop Lodge / Nature Reserve. When you reach a T-Junction, turn left to Winterton. Take a right over the railway line (R600) when you get into Winterton. This is directly opposite the Engen garage. Follow that road until you reach the crossroads at Thokozisa. Go straight over the crossroads and travel a further 15 kms, until you see Dragon Peaks or Drakensberg Boys Choir on your right hand side. Turn right through the beige walled entrance and follow the road down past the Drakensberg Boys Choir for 1km. Go through the security gate and follow the signage.
